The five poets were once men who were turned into stone by the hag and stood there at the feet of the Glastonbury Tor hill. Between them, there was a sorcerous barrier set by the Mad Monk.
The poets retained their voice with which they would pose riddles to the travelers. By answering all five of the riddles, the traveler would be teleported to the Tor. Somehow Arthur's mule managed to pass through the barrier.
