Poseidon was the sea-god of the Greeks.

Queen Phaedra lied to King Theseus that his son, Hippolytus, had raped her. The king called Poseidon to exact vengeance. While Hippolytus drove his chariot along the shore of the Saronic Gulf, Poseidon sent a fierce bull from the waves to panic the horses, dragging Hippolytus to his death behind the chariot.
